COLUMBIA CITY — “I guess you could call it a ‘nail biter,’” said Pam Thompson, one of Whitley County’s coordinators for the Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) program.
Hannah Schaefer, a senior from Columbia City High School, represented Whitley County in the state DYW program Saturday. When the field of 23 young women was cut down to the top 10, Schaefer’s name and number wasn’t called until last.
Placing the top 10 meant Schaefer had a chance to vie for the Distinguished Young Woman of Indiana.
“I really didn’t think I was going to make it in the top ten,” said Schaefer. “I was praying that I would make it.”
As a finalist Schaefer won a $500 cash scholarship. Schaefer, as well as the other finalists, repeated the on-stage categories of fitness, talent and self-expression.
