COLUMBIA CITY — At Whitley County Consolidated Schools, the position of assistant superintendent has been vacant since 2010. In an effort to save money, the district elected to freeze the position until funds were available.
This year, officials were able to work the position into the budget, and Thursday night, the school board named Dr. Laura McDermott as the WCCS assistant superintendent. McDermott is currently the principal at Coesse Elementary School, and has 19 years of experience in education. She will finish out the school year at Coesse and take on her new duties July 1, 2014.
Superintendent Patricia O’Connor said she is excited to bring McDermott on board. O’Connor said McDermott will have many responsibilities and duties, and will be working with herself, as well as the director of business and operation.
McDermott has been with WCCS for three years, and has spent time working in four different school districts — South Harrison, Madison Consolidated Schools and Frankfort, along with WCCS. McDermott moved to Whitley County to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren.
She first worked as an elementary teacher for seven years, and has been a principal for 12. “When I moved from teacher to principal, I realized I was able to make more of an impact on the students,” McDermott said. She worked to earn her doctorate in 2013.
