COLUMBIA CITY — Surrounded by elementary students, Indiana State Superintendent Glenda Ritz took time to tap into her inner child Friday at Coesse Elementary School.
Speaking in colorful voices that helped to portray thought-provoking life lessons, Ritz read books to students as part of the school’s Emphasis on Reading Week.
“Literacy is so important,” Ritz said. “It is something these kids will need for the rest of their lives.”
Improved literacy is an initiative close to Ritz’s heart. A previous teacher and a former librarian, she knows first-hand the impact reading skills can have on a student’s academic success.
