COLUMBIA CITY – Volunteers and child advocates gathered at the Whitley County Courthouse in observation of National Child Abuse Prevention Month Tuesday.
Steve Weaver, director for Whitley County’s Department of Child Services, passed out pinwheels, which were placed around the Courthouse gazebo as a symbol of prevention awareness.
“This is about unity and solidarity in making children a priority,” said Weaver. “Child abuse prevention is a cause that should mobilize our communities to blend our resources, talents and efforts in order to protect vulnerable children.”
According to DCS records, in 2013 a total of 478 reports of abuse were made. Of those reports, 73 were substantiated.
