Robert Stangland, 89, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:12 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014, and reunited with his wife, Waundean who passed away this past September.
A life-long resident of Whitley County, Bob was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Jefferson Township, he was the son of James and Grace (Mohn) Stangland.
The family moved to Troy Township in 1928. That was home for Bob for the next 80 years. He attended Troy Township School and then graduated from Larwill High School with the Class of 1943. It was there where he excelled in track and basketball. On June 9, 1945, he married Waundean Hile and for 69 years they were inseparable, moving to Columbia City in the early 2000s.
In addition to farming, Bob drove school bus for Etna-Troy for several years and retired from Raber Co-Op in 1990. Even after retirement he wasn’t ready to settle down and continued to raise cattle. He attended West Point United Methodist Church.
His sense of humor, smile, positive outlook and role of patriarch of the family will be greatly missed by his children, Glenn Stangland of Atlanta, Ga., Norm Stangland of East Lansing, Mich., Dean (Jodi) Stangland of Columbia City and Kathy (Mark) Bleeke of Fort Wayne.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Tamara, Tiffany, Tara, Chad, Heather, Travis and Craig along with five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to Waundean and his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Orcutt and Dorothy Stangland.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Lois Cannon officiating. Burial will follow at Christian Chapel Cemetery where Bob and Waundean will again be together.
