COLUMBIA CITY — Families took advantage of the sunny day and free fishing derby at the pond in Morsches Park Saturday.
Approximately 400 rainbow trout averaging 12 inches long were stocked in Morsches Pond Friday to prepare for the derby, which was sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Jed Pearson, the district fisheries biologist for the DNR, said the event was organized to provide more families with fishing opportunities.
“This was the first year we’ve done something like this,” said Pearson. “We plan to do the event again next year.”
Fishing gear was donated by the Northeast Indiana Trout Association, which gave young anglers prizes to earn.
Pearson said the event was “successful,” and also served as a chance to possibly repopulate the small pond.
