LAGRANGE — High hopes turned to an early exit for Churubusco basketball teams Wednesday night.
A night after having the opening round postponed, ’Busco squads took the court at Prairie Heights for the first of what it hoped was four games and a championship in the North East Corner Conference tournament.
That didn’t happen as the Lady Eagles (3-11) opened the girl-boy doubleheader with a 47-32 loss to the Lady Panthers (7-7).
Wednesday was the second trip to the NECC foe’s home court for Churubusco. Less than a month ago on Dec. 18, the Lady Eagles narrowly missed a conference road win falling 48-44 to Heights.
The second time around for the Lady Eagles saw them with a lead after the first quarter despite a poor shooting night.
’Busco matched its eight points in the first quarter in every quarter on the night. Unfortunately, for the Eagles a 26 percent shooting night didn’t stand up to a Prairie Heights team that shot 48 percent from the field.
The hosting Panthers battled back to hold an 18-16 lead at halftime.
With a game-high 12 points from Emily Christoffel, Prairie Heights outscored the Lady Eagles by 13 points in the second half including a 16-8 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Prairie Heights won the battle of the glass 36-26, where it got many of its points on second chances.
Despite the loss, Churubusco’s defense forced 25 Prairie Heights turnovers compared to 19 by the Lady Eagles. ’Busco grabbed 14 steals in the midst of those turnovers.
Scorers for the Lady Eagles were: Morgan Young 9, Haleigh Gross 7, Kasey Gibson 5, Alex Walker 4, Chandler Blake 3, Nicole Wormcastle 2, Heather Monk 2.
A late boys game needed overtime to decide a winner.
Churubusco (6-3) was on the losing end 71-66 to a Prairie Heights (6-5) team it beat earlier in the season by 25 points. Senior Kyle Monk led all ’Busco scorers with 23 points. Dylan Herendeen followed with a season-high 17 points. Prairie Heights’ Mike Reynolds had a game-high 29 points.
Due to the opening-round postponement, consolation games schedule for tonight will not be played.
