Mother Nature has not been kind to the sports schedule in Whitley County.
Tuesday and Wednesday are a prime example of what truly controls the schedule.
Just a week and a half into the busy spring sports schedule, wet conditions and less than ideal temperatures have given several teams across the county a slow start to the season.
Columbia City softball alone has seen more games canceled than its played. Now, of eight games scheduled to be play so far, the Lady Eagles have been able to play two of them. The latest cancelation came today with a schedule home game against Churubusco. The Lady Eagles also had to cancel an April 29 game against Northrop due to a conference make-up game for the Bruins.
The last came a week ago today at Garrett. Since then four games against three different opponents have been postponed.
The latest came Wednesday in a home game against Leo that is one of many games spring teams might not be able to make up.
Spring sports has a short time frame of roughly six weeks to get regular season games and matches in.
With as little as one or two open make-up nights a week, lining up a make-up date with the other school can be difficult.
As of Thursday morning, three local high schools have scheduled new dates for some events while others are still working on finding a day.
The following is what has been reschedule for each of the three schools:
Columbia City — Softball host Warsaw April 28, at Whitko May 3; Baseball host Leo May 4 (tentative), host Northrop May 9.
Note: Girls and boys track and field teams had three meets canceled and will not be made up. Boys’ golf is still working on a make-up date for a home match against Homestead.
Churubusco — Baseball at Lakeland May 4 (no junior varsity); Softball at Eastside May 6; Girls Track at Prairie Heights tonight; Boys Track at Central Noble Wednesday.
Whitko — Softball hosts Columbia City May 3; Girls Tennis hosts Rochester May 4; JV Baseball hosts Norwell Wednesday, hosts North Miami May 7 (doubleheader).
Note: No make-up date set yet for softball at home against Central Noble.
