MONROE — Coming off an opening round sectional win over South Adams Tuesday, Churubusco’s girls basketball team traveled to Adams Central High School to play the hosting Lady Flying Jets in its second round
The Lady Eagles knocked off their opponent, 31-24, and will head back today to face Fort Wayne Bishop Luers for the sectional championship.
“I’m proud of our girls for sticking together and giving us a change to win a sectional,” said ‘Busco Head Coach Jamie Perlich.
In the first quarter, Adams Central took a early lead, carrying it into the second quarter with the score reading 9-6. Although out-scoring the Lady Flying Jets in the second, the half still ended 18-16 in Adams Central’s favor.
In the second half, the ‘Busco defense tightened up. “We played outstanding defense as a team tonight,” Perlich said. “We held them to six points in the second half.”
The Lady Eagles held the Lady Flying Jets to just three points in the third period. However, they scored only four and still trailed heading into the final eight minutes, 21-20. In the fourth, holding Adams Central again to three points, the tide turned for the ‘Busco offense.
The Lady Eagles put up 11, led by Montana Martin work at the charity stripe. “Montana made six free-throws down the stretch to seal it for us,” Perlich said. “(Haleigh) Gross played well offensively as well.”
Gross led the team with 12 points followed by Savannah Labenz who scored four. Lacey Pulley netted three points, while Chandler Blake and Heather Monk both chipped in two a piece.
Tip-off time for the sectional title is 7:30 p.m. at Adams Central.
