COESSE — Circumstances prevented a devastating fire Tuesday from being even more tragic. “The farm hand had just left about a half hour before and a passerby called it in,” said Union Township Fire Chief Chad Radke this morning about Tuesday’s fire that destroyed a horse barn at Stockamp Ranch east of Columbia City.
Radke said today the damage was too extensive for fire investigators to determine the cause.
“It was fully involved by the time everybody got there,” he said. According to Radke, fire crews from Union, Columbia City, Columbia Township, Arcola, Jefferson Township and Smith-Green Township were dispatched to the scene.
Although there was no loss of human or animal life, Radke said some farm equipment and an antique car were still in the barn and couldn’t be retrieved.
