SOUTH WHITLEY — Empty buildings in the heart of South Whitley continues to be a concern for South Whitley Town Council members as Town Attorney Greg Hockemeyer addressed the board regarding issues of blight in downtown areas.
Hockemeyer gave the board information this week on the Redevelopment Commission which is responsible for developing plans and managing tools used to address conditions of blight and underutilized land of economic significance (economic development areas).
The Kent Theatre, which was currently the home to the Turning Point Church, burned on Feb. 18 with the building deemed a total loss. Council members authorized Hockemeyer to organize a study committee who will meet on a regular basis and brainstorm ideas for the downtown area. The committee will include one council member, utility manager Dennis Eberhart, police chief Dave Wilkinson and Whitley County Economic Development director Alan Tio.
The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on March 13.
