SOUTH WHITLEY — On Tuesday evening, South Whitley’s Clerk-Treasurer Bob Gould reported to town council members on financial and record keeping duties, which continues to be ongoing in the clerk’s office.
“A couple of items came across in the mail this week from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Indiana Department of Revenue where there were some tax payments paid late,” Gould said. “I just need approval to pay those, plus I have spoken with the State Board of Accounts and they are the ones that will pursue getting the penalty paid back for the two amounts, with one at $585.74 and the other $1,119.36.”
Gould said a warning was issued to the Town of South Whitley approximately three years ago that penalties would apply for late tax payments and the responsibility would lie on the current Clerk-Treasurer.
“Either way, it’s our responsibility to pay because it is our town’s tax,” Starkey said. “Everything else is something I want Greg to look into and just see what is going on.”
Motion was passed to pay a total of $1,705.10 to the IRS and the Indiana Department of Revenue for penalties on late payment of taxes with contention upon Hockemeyer’s clarification that this is the town’s debt.
The next meeting is scheduled for March 27 at 6:30 p.m.
