Rev. Father Daniel Robert Leeuw, 83, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012.
Born in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Edward A. and Madonna C. (Manier) Leeuw.
He was ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Fort Wayne by Bishop Leo A. Pursley on May 25, 1957.
His education included Precious Blood Grade School, Fort Wayne, Central Catholic High School, St. Joseph’s College Rensselaer, Indiana University, the University of Dayton (bachelor’s degree), University of Notre Dame (master’s degree) and St. Meinrad School of Theology.
Assignments and Apostolates included associate pastor of St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend from 1957 to 1960; teacher at St. Joseph’s High School, South Bend from 1957 to 1963; associate pastor of St. Stephen Church, South Bend from 1960 to 1963, associate pastor SS of Peter & Paul Church in Huntington from 1963 to 1965; principal of Huntington Catholic High School in Huntington from 1963 to 1965; associate pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, New Haven from 1965 to 1972; professor of theology, philosophy and social service of the University of St. Francis from 1965 to 1971; college instructor at Ancilla College, Donaldson and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Fort Wayne from 1969 to 1982; pastor at St. Aloysius Church, Yoder from 1972 to 1985; chaplain and department manager of Pastoral Care, Provena Sacred Heart Home, Avilla from 1985 to 2011, chaplain of Canterbury Rehabilitation Center & Nursing Home from 1985 to 2011; chaplain of Byron Health Center, Fort Wayne from 1987 to 2011; chaplain and staff employee of V.A. Northern Indiana Health Care System from 1991 to the present.
Special Apostolates included diocesan moderator for the National Council of Catholic Nurses; South Bend deanery moderator of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine from 1957 to 1964; diocesan director of continuing education of the clergy from 1972 to 1980, Knights of Columbus chaplain, Council #1790, Garrett, Faithful Friar. Knights of Columbus, Mother Teresa Assemby #2581.
Surviving are his brother, Edward A. Leeuw of Columbia City, sister-in-law, Rita Leeuw of Fort Wayne, 10 nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews and two great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Edward A. & Madonna C. Leeuw; brother, Richard Leeuw, Sr.; sister in law, Lois Leeuw; niece, Donita; nephew, David.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 1500 W. State Blvd. with Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades officiating.
Calling will be at the church Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with rosary at 4 p.m. and vigil at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council #1790 Garrett or Masses.
