COLUMBIA CITY — Robert Foster McLaughlin, 98, formerly of Union Township, died Monday, March 19, 2012, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo, Mich. where he was admitted Wednesday.
He was born July 29, 1913, in Sac City, Iowa, a son of John Walter and Mary Elizabeth (Foster) McLaughlin.
As a young boy, his family moved to Ohio.
He graduated from Antwerp High School and continued his education at Bowling Green College.
On Dec. 9, 1936, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Price.
They made their home in Antwerp, Ohio until the early 1940s when they moved to Fort Wayne.
In 1951, they moved to Union Township. From 1994 until 2008 they spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz.
In June, 2008, Robert moved to Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, joining his wife at their year-round home. Mrs. McLaughlin died March 25, 2011.
During World War II, Robert served in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he began working for Salsbury Axle in Fort Wayne until his retirement from Dana Corporation in 1978.
His memberships included Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church and Free & Accepted Masons in Fort Wayne.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Rebecca S. (Dennis) Pence of Kalamazoo Mich. and Cynthia A. (James) Miller of Scottsdale Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Adam Pence, Lauren Miller, Jordan Miller Logan and Lindsay Miller Fox.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Jean Lombardo and Mildred Mettert.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation after 10 a.m. The burial will be in Jefferson Chapel Cemetery.
