SOUTH WHITLEY — Despite a threatening sixth inning, Whitko’s baseball team held on for a 9-7 win over Eastbrook Friday night in South Whitley.
The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Austin Mort and Alex Stoddard scored off a single by Riley Cokl, and Wyatt Wolf hit a groundout to drive teammate Zach Snep to home plate.
Eastbrook didn’t score its first run until the fourth frame.
Whitko blew the game open in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Wolf took the first run of the frame off a Eastbrook pitching error. Then Ryan Weigold hit an RBI single, giving Ethan Nicodemus the run. Weigold worked his way around the bases to score off another Eastbrook error.
The visiting team tallied four errors on the game.
Wes Gensch scored off a double by Mort, who then got a run with the help of Stoddard’s double. Though Eastbrook fought back with five sixth-frame runs, the Wildcats hung on for the win. Pitcher Nicodemus was awarded with the win, with three strikeouts in five innings.
Stoddard also took a turn at the mound with four strikeouts in two innings to close the game. Both pitchers gave up six hits apiece, giving Eastbrook 12 hits on the game, to Whitko’s nine.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday at Garrett for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
