COLUMBIA CITY — “Celebrating the Journey” is the theme for National Nursing Home Week 2012.
Throughout the week, Miller’s Merry Manor will plan events to honor the lives and milestones of the people they care for and the staff who serve them. The following is one of the stories.
Link has been a resident at Miller’s Merry Manor for almost two years. She has had a full and busy life. In 1956 she married Kenneth Link.
At the age of 22, she graduated from Lutheran School of Nursing in Fort Wayne. She then went on to raise three wonderful daughters and took in two foster children as well.
Once her daughters were out of high school, she moved to Naples, Fla. where she lived for a year before becoming a nanny nurse for Paul and Barbara Slater.
She then returned to Columbia City and worked at Whitley County Hospital, retiring from there in 1994. She then did home care for two years before fully retiring.
Bonnie is very well known in the community and can never go out on an outing without running into someone she knows. She continues to go out for lunch with friends and spends time away from the facility with her daughters and grandchildren. She keeps active at Miller’s Merry Manor, and they are glad to have her there Celebrating the Journey.
Rupert has worked at Miller’s Merry Manor for 12 years.
She started there as a C.N.A., and she is currently an LPN. In November of 1999, she signed up to take the C.N.A. class at Miller’s Merry Manor.
“I have always wanted to help take care of people so I decided to start with the daily care of residents in a nursing home,” said Rupert.
While working there, she continued to receive her O.M.A., which then led to her attending nursing school.
Rupert has been a variety of people working at Miller’s Merry Manor.
“Each resident has a different story to tell of how they have grown up, how and where they have worked and how things have changed as they have grown old,” said Rupert. “One of my greatest rewards working here at Miller’s has been that I have had the honor to care for four family members since my employment started. I hope to be here for many more years to come and to continue helping and caring for those who need nursing care.”
