KENDALLVILLE — Churubusco’s boys golf team placed an impressive fourth out of 11 teams in the Northeast Corner Conference Golf Tournament Saturday at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville.
The Eagles’ score of 333 was just behind third-place Lakeland, second-place Angola and NECC Champion Fairfield, which shot a course blistering 304.
’Busco freshman Beau Barkley waited until conference to shoot his best round of the season, firing an impressive three over par (74). The highlight of the day was Barkley’s second shot on hole No.3.
He was 150 yards out in the tall fescue and proceeded to slam dunk it in the hole for an Eagle two.
“I just hit it at the green, then went to look for it and somebody yelled, ‘It went in the hole!,’” Barkley said.
Senior Ryan Mayer completed his final conference match shooting a 79.
“I’m extremely proud of the way Ryan has stepped up and been a great leader for the team this year,” Head Coach Todd Fry said.
Barkley’s 74 and Mayer’s 79 were good enough to place them both on the NECC 1st-team All-Conference Team.
The top 15 make first team. Barkley came in fifth and Mayer tied for 11th overall.
Sophomore Brad Martin just missed making the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team by a single stroke, firing an 88.
Junior Parker Conrad and Sophomore Brandon Norris rounded out the Eagle team shooting 92 and 94, respectively.
The Eagles have one home match left against Bishop Luers Tuesday at Eel River before heading back to Noble Hawk for sectionals June 1.
