PIERCETON — Recognized and honored for making a significant impact on education, the 2012 Friend of Education award was presented to April Lehman by Whitko Community School Corporation’s (WCSC) Superintendent, Steve Clason.
The award was presented at Monday evening’s School Board of Trustees monthly meeting.
“This award is given to someone who unselfishly gives of their time in an effort to help with our schools to make them a better place,” Clason said.
Clason said Lehman was nominated by three separate individuals which is unusual.
“That doesn’t usually happen,” Clason said. “You normally get one nomination for one person.”
Lehman was presented with a plaque from Clason for dedicating numerous hours at Pierceton Elementary School.
Lehman helped in the library, volunteered with extra work for teachers and was always willing to help out in any situation.
Clason also presented Whitko High School senior, Logan Irwin, with a plaque for his four-year commitment to WHS basketball.
Irwin climbed the state ranks to 12th place in all-time leading scorers in Indiana basketball history with 2,230 points as a team player.
“I don’t think you have a rebound record, but I think you have every other record that we keep,” Clason said. “You are amazing and thank you for everything you have done for Whitko.”
Irwin’s father, Rob, has stepped down as the boys’ head basketball coach at WHS after seven years of dedication to the sport.
“I’m very appreciative that you recognized him,” WHS Assistant Principal, David Parker said. “Logan has been a great student and a great kid and I wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Parker has been with WCSC for two years and will step up to the position of WHS principal beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. Parrish Kruger will become the new principal at Whitko Middle School filling the void left by Jerry Klausing who will retire at the end of the school year.
