CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football seniors ended their final regular-season game with more than a Northeast Corner Conference title Friday night.
The Eagles topped (formerly) undefeated Lakeland 38-16 to win their fourth and final conference championship of their careers.
Despite taking on the only team withouth a loss in the NECC, Churubusco’s seniors modeled their familiarity as the conference’s top dogs, holding the lead for nearly the entire game.
“We knew it was going to be a big game and we were excited for the challenge,” Churubusco stand-out senior Jason Nicodemus said.
Nicodemus ran in five touchdowns and tallied 217 of ’Busco’s 284 total yards.
Senior Cory Miller was the team’s second leading rusher with 53 yards.
Despite a broken wrist, senior quarterback Jay Petrie threw 2-for-5 for 16 yards.
Senior Parker Conrad connected with a field goal with 2.5 seconds left in the first half and converted all five extra-point attempts.
Senior Joe Zumbrun had an earth-shattering sack on a third down, forcing Lakeland to a 4th-and-35 to set up a Churubusco scoring drive and forced a fumble in the first quarter with another hard hit.
Senior Cody Schaefer intercepted a Lakeland pass with less than a minute left on the clock to seal the win for the Eagles.
The Eagles, now 8-1, are looking to carry their momentum through the post-season, as they host Oak Hill in the opening round of sectionals Friday.
