CHESTERTON — The Columbia City High School Marching Eagles performed at the Indiana State School Music Association’s Class B Regional competition Saturday at Chesterton High School, garnering a silver rating.
The Marching Eagles competed against 14 other bands — 10 of which will continue on to the semi-state level competition in two weeks.
The band’s show this year was titled “Flight of Fantasy,” featuring music from the Final Fantasy game series composed by Nobuo Uematsu.
The band’s leader pointed out the group’s rigorous rehearsal schedule, which begins before the school year.
“We started working on the show in the first week of June this year,” said Helen Hockemeyer, director of bands at Columbia City High School.
In the time since then, the Marching Eagles have spent more than 10 hours each week in rehearsal fine-tuning the show.
The Marching Eagles were the first band to perform for the Class B competition, taking the field at 4:51 p.m. and marching their most emotional show of the year, according to Hockemeyer.
Gold at regional competition is always a goal for the Marching Eagles, and each year the band works itself closer to that goal, Hockemeyer said.
