CC tennis reclaims Wawasee title

The Columbia City boys’ tennis team celebrated its third Wawasee Invitational title in four seasons Saturday after edging Fairfield 3-2.    SYRACUSE — For Columbia City boys’ tennis Labor Day weekend has been good to them.
   Coming off a title at the Wawasee Invitational last season, the Eagles were back in Syracuse to defend that crown Saturday.
   After edging out an undefeated Fairfield squad 3-2 in the finals, Columbia City took home its third championship trophy in four seasons.
   “I was really happy with how our team responded after such a close loss last Thursday to Norwell,” said CC head coach Doug Stoffel. “The guys stayed focused, despite a constant 20 mph wind, and seemed to step up at the right times.”
   The Eagles had the help of two positions who have yet to see a loss this season.
   No. 3 singles Dylan Hinen, in his first year as a singles player, continued his unblemished mark going 3-0 on the day.
   Hinen helped City shutout first round opponent Jimtown 5-0 with all five match victories coming on two set wins.
   The other undefeated position for CC is a duo of seniors in Alan Murphy and J.T. Biggs at No. 1 doubles.
   The Eagle seniors cruised to the finals getting City past semifinal foe Wawasee 4-1 with the help of their 6-2, 6-1 win.
   Columbia City found its toughest opponent in the finals with Fairfield sporting an overall undefeated team record of its own.
   Two more seniors went 3-0 on the day for Columbia City. Travis Johnson and Cole Craven served as one of two crucial wins for the Eagles in a sweep of doubles play.
   Craven and Johnson had the most convincing win of any Eagles match beating Logan Munn and Nate Kropf 6-1, 6-2.
   The other half of the CC doubles sweep came from Murphy and Biggs on a super tiebreaker 6-7, 6-3 (10-7) win.
   Fairfield picked up wins in the top two singles spots over No. 1 Dylan Hinen of Columbia City and No. 2 Gabe Boles.
   Boles fell after winning the second set 7-5 and forcing a tiebreaker where he lost 8-10.
   Derek Hinen gave Columbia City its only point for singles. Hinen got the lone point over Jordan Hochstetler of Fairfield 6-1, 7-5.
   Both the No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles positions are 10-0 for the season.
