COLUMBIA CITY — The Center for Whitley County Youth recently received a grant of $45,000 from the Dekko Foundation. The grant will be used to further The Center’s Building Hope project.
Jeff Wike, The Center’s executive director, said the project is just over the half-way mark to its goal of raising $210,00.
In December of 2011, The Center was able to purchase its building debt free. Owning the building free and clear means the organization eliminated $10,000 a year in rent payments.
Some of the work already completed includes roof and plumbing repairs, sump pump installation to prevent flooding and some cosmetic construction inside the building.
With the grant funds received, The Center’s building will address the inefficiency of the stained-glass windows, upgrading electrical systems, auditorium renovations and other enhancements to prolong the building’s operating systems.
The Center offers 13 different programs for Whitley County youth each week. Five nights a week, approximately 300 middle and high school students attend various after school programs.
