DeKalb County — The Indiana State Police, with the assistance of the DeKalb County Sheriff Department, investigated a two vehicle head-on crash that occurred yesterday morning on State Road 1, which claimed the life of a 45 year old man from Butler and now a 13 year old girl from Fort Wayne.
According to Master Trooper Gary Gerardot, yesterday at approximately 8:30 a.m. a 1993 Lincoln two door passenger car driven by 33 year old Melissa A. Mills from Fort Wayne, Indiana and a 1996 Jeep SUV driven by 28 year old Ashley L. Crow of Saint Joe, Indiana collided head-on in a curve on State Road 1, just north of County Road 72, which is the Allen/DeKalb County Line.
As a result of the crash, Mills’ front seat passenger, 45 year old Ryan K. Turner of Butler, Indiana was killed and pronounced dead at the scene by the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office. Although Turner was wearing his seatbelt at the time, his injuries were too severe and were not survivable. A rear seat passenger in Mills’ vehicle, 13 year old Aiyana Mills, was critically injured and was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition. Early on Saturday afternoon, Aiyana Mills died as a result of her injuries. It is not known if she was wearing her seatbelt or not. Both Melissa Mills (head injury) and Crow (internal injuries) were taken to a Fort Wayne hospital and their conditions are not known.
Because of discrepancies in driver accounts and witness statements, Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists were called to assist in this investigation. Their findings are still pending. State Road 1 between the County Line and County Road 68 was closed for approximately four hours during the investigation and subsequent clean up. Also assisting at the scene were the DeKalb County EMS, Spencerville, Concord Township and Garret Fire Departments.
