CHURUBUSCO — Creating new memories is what inspired Tim Holmes, of Churubusco, to reopen Papa’s Place restaurant.
“Someone told me they would love their kids to be able to experience Papa’s Place,” said Tim. “Those kids who are now parents remember coming to Papa’s after school, having bread sticks and hanging out. That generation was really the last to get to do that. I am glad to offer that experience to today’s teens.”
Originally the establishment was launched Dec. 1, 1983, under the name Mama Sue’s. After moving to a new location on Main Street, Mama Sue’s transformed into Papa’s Place serving the community for almost 20 years.
It’s items such as the sausage roll that will not just satisfy the appetite, but will evoke memories for patrons.
In July, Tim’s wife, Sue, passed away. It was then that Tim decided to explore relaunching the restaurant. Sue created most of the recipes, which will be reintroduced when Papa’s opens in February. But Tim’s son, Timmy, will have a hand in reinvigorating the traditional menu items.
Bringing back Papa’s Place was the “right thing to do,” according to Tim. When Pit Stop Pizza closed last year, it left Churubusco without a hometown pizza establishment. Tim saw the need and wanted to try to fill it.
Operating out of the former Mountaintop Coffee House location, Papa’s Place will once again occupy Main Street.
Tim’s plans are to open Feb. 12. From there, Papa’s Place will serve lunch and dinner. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Papa’s will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays lunch will be available with the restaurant opening up at 11 a.m.
“Sue would be really happy we’ve decided to reopen,” Tim said. “I know she will be here with us in spirit, and her warmth will still be felt with every meal served.”
