CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys basketball team took another step of progress in a Northeast Corner Conference win Thursday.
The Eagles were able to build upon a lead and make it larger in their 62-48 defeat of Hamilton at home.
‘Busco now has a record of 2-17 on the year and is 2-6 in the conference. Hamilton drops to 5-13 and is 1-7 in the NECC.
“We played with the lead,” Eagle head coach Michael McBride said. “Not only did we have the lead, but we extended the lead, which is something we have not had the opportunity to do a lot with our season the way it’s gone.”
Scores were knotted early, as the score was 15-15 after one quarter. Soon ‘Busco would be off and running, going on a 10-0 stretch to open the second period. Hamilton was able to close the gap and the margin was just four at halftime, 30-26 in favor of the Eagles.
“I was a little disappointed that we got up by 10 in the second quarter and we weren’t able to maintain that,” McBride said. “Defensively we made some mistakes.”
Scales were already about to tip in ‘Busco’s favor, though. The Marines began having foul trouble in the first half, and those woes continued in the second half, giving the Eagles a chance to gain a larger edge. Overall, ‘Busco shot 22-32 on the night. Such offensive prowess was key to the team’s victory.
“We were very efficient offensively,” McBride said. “We had better offensive possessions than what we have had in the past, we took care of the ball well, which helped us.”
Brent Simmons led the way for the Eagles, scoring 26 points for the evening. Blake Gross had 16 as well for ‘Busco. Casey Rote led the Marines with 14 points.
‘Busco is next in action on Friday, Feb. 15 at Fairfield. Hamilton also plays next on the 15th, playing at West Noble.
