Eagles squeak out win

SYRACUSE — Those in attendance at the baseball game between Columbia City and Wawasee Tuesday night were treated to a high-scoring affair.

The Eagles managed to come out on top of the Warriors 13-12.

The contest was back-and-forth, as there were eight lead changes.

The deciding run wasn’t scored until the top of the seventh inning, when Eagle first baseman Zac Steinke hit an RBI single that drove in senior Derek Hinen from second. That run broke a 12-12 tie.

Pitcher Ryan Kerschner retook the mound for the bottom of the seventh to finish out the game.

Col. City qualifies three for state meet

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls track team did all as expected Tuesday night at Northrop’s regional meet.

Three Lady Eagles qualified for the state finals in June.

Samantha Roush is advancing in the mile run, Kalisha Goree hit the state-qualifiying leap in long jump, and Carlee Hearld is moving on again in the high jump.

Hearld and Roush placed 10th in the state meet last season.

Roush placed second at Tuesday’s regional with a time of 5:04.9 in the 1,600-meter run.

Roush also ran the 800-meter, with a non-state qualifying finish.

Lakers defeat Eagles

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s baseball team dropped an extra-inning NECC game Monday.

The Eagles fell to Lakeland, 6-5, in 10 innings.

Churubusco took a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Lakers slowly crawled back, chipping in a run in the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth.

Lakeland finally broke the scoreless struggle that went into extra innings by notching one run in the top of the 10th.

Columbia City’s softball team suffered a season-ending loss to Carroll in the first round of sectionals Monday.

After taking a 1-0 lead, the Lady Eagles fell 11-1 to the Lady Chargers. Pictured above is Allie Vodde.
