THUNDER: Trine women grab win

NOTRE DAME — The Trine University women raced out to an early lead and never looked back in a 70-58 victory over St. Mary’s in Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Association-action Wednesday night at Angela Athletic Facility.

The Thunder came out firing on all cylinders to take a 12-0 lead, and never trailed in the contest. The win was Trine’s first regular-season MIAA win ever at St. Mary’s.

GRAPPLERS: Gearing up

Columbia City senior Tristin Anglin works to turn Norwell’s Chandler Schoeff at the Northeast Hoosier Conference tournament. Wrestlers from Whitko and Churubusco will join Anglin and his Columbia City teammates at the IHSAA Carroll Sectional on Saturday. The opening round begins at 8 a.m.

SEMI-FINAL WINNERS: ISMS girls move to title games

HUNTERTOWN — Indian Springs Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball teams are headed to the conference title games on Monday after winning in the semi-finals Wednesday night.
The seventh-grade Lady Eagles traveled to Carroll Middle School to face Summit Middle School (Homestead).

The Lady Eagles took an 18-7 lead at halftime and finished with a 35-12 win. The seventh-grade squad improves to a perfect 15-0 record on the season and moves on to the championship game Monday at 5 p.m. at ISMS against Maple Creek.

TEAMS GEARING UP FOR GAMES: New Haven, Wabash, C. Noble on tap for local teams this weekend

WHITLEY COUNTY — Columbia City’s boys travel to New Haven Friday night to face a struggling Bulldogs’ squad.
New Haven, which has been a dominant contender in recent years, is 4-9 and 2-2 in the Northeast Hoosier Conference, with losses to Carroll and Norwell and wins over Bellmont and DeKalb.

Columbia City’s girls take a shot at New Haven Saturday night at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs are 5-13 and 1-5 in the NHC.
Columbia City’s girls are 18-4 with only one loss at home, against Homestead (19-2).
