Churubusco’s basketball team played host to Adams Central Wednesday night for a season-opening thriller between the Eagles and the Jets. In the end, ’Busco pulled out a 53-50 win.

Adams Central kept it close early on by finding 6-foot-6 big man Luke Voirol inside. However, Churubusco took control after switching to a 2-3 zone defense, neutralized the Jets' inside attack.

The Eagles also had success inside the paint, particularly from Dakota Barkley.

Churubusco pulled away in the second quarter, holding a nine-point lead at the break.

The third quarter was more of the same for the Eagles, who broke down the Jets' full court trap and found open shooters. Adams Central's offense struggled to find open looks through Churubusco's defense, leading to a 13-point Eagle lead heading into the fourth.

Mistakes by Churubusco and key 3-pointers by Adams Central turned the tide, closing the gap to three with just under two minutes to play.

Free throws by Barkley and Drew Buffenbarger extended the Eagle lead to seven at 49-42.

The Jets responded with a mid-range jumper, followed by a steal that led to a fast break foul. After two free throws, the score was 49-46.

Churubusco's Josh Howk hit two free throws to stretch the lead to five, but with under a minute left, Adams Central hit a three and forced a 10-second violation with its full court trap, leaving the door open for a comeback win.

The Jets worked the ball around as the clocked ticked down and launched an open 3-pointer that clanked off the rim. After free throws, Churubusco won the game 53-50.

"We did a really nice job in the second and third quarters," Churubusco Head Coach Michael McBride said. "Then what we did was make inexperienced mistakes. We had a 13-point lead and that's where we have to understand the value of a possession."

The Eagles return to action Saturday, hosting Fort Wayne's Wayne at 6 p.m.
