Garrett downs Columbia City, 42-27

GARRETT — Garrett Railroaders wrestling celebrated senior night Wednesday with a victory over visiting Columbia City, 42-27.“I was proud of the guys. I thought they really wrestled well,” Columbia City Head Coach Blane Culp said.A Garrett forfeit at 182 pounds gave the Eagles a 6-0 advantage to start the match. The first action on the mat was the 195-pound weight class, with Russell Hazelet facing Railroader Austin Gibson. Hazelet took it to all three periods before losing by a score of 17-3, cutting the Eagles’ lead to 6-4.In the 220 weight class, Eagle Tristin Anglin and Travis Carunchia, went the distance in their match until Anglin was pinned with just seconds to spare in the third. Anglin had won five of his last eight matches heading into the contest.“He’s been wrestling well lately,” said Culp. “He wrestled one of their better wrestlers — he (Carunchia) will probably be down at Conseco Fieldhouse (State Tournament) — he (Anglin) was in the match the entire time until the last 20 seconds and he got pinned. “You can’t ask much more of a freshman wrestling one of their senior studs.”Bryce Forrester answered with a pin of his own at the one-minute mark in the second period in his match against Dustin Alwin to keep Columbia City close, 20-18. “That was a big pin for us,” Culp said.Culp said he believes the experience the team has gotten this year will carry over into next season. “I believe next year, we start using some of this experience and we’re going to be a force. People are going to have to start paying attention to us.”Columbia City travels to East Noble Saturday for the Northeast Hoosier Conference tourney.
