GUNFIRE: Man shoots shotgun, gets arrested

COLUMBIA CITY — A South Whitley man was arrested on six charges early Sunday morning, after firing a shotgun four times from his residence, with police in the area.Phillip J. Kessie, 36, already convicted as a violent felon on previous charges and who is on probation, was charged with possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, criminal recklessness, reckless driving, possession of paraphernalia, resisting law enforcement and operating while intoxicated.The incident began late Saturday night, with a reported domestic fight while driving. According to a case report, the fight broke up, and Kessie was nowhere to be found for several hours.Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Geist got word that Kessie was at a residence on CR 950 W. near CR 300 S, after he allegedly called the person he was in the fight with, and told her he was going to burn the house down and commit suicide.As Geist was approaching the residence, four shots were fired from a shotgun.After back-up arrived and before further action was taken, Kessie reportedly fled the residence and got in his vehicle. Police chased him and he got out of the car and fled before being detained.He is being held on a $35,500 surety bond and may possibly receive enhanced charges, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.
