Hoosier history comes alive at local ag museum

COLUMBIA CITY — Fourth graders from all four elementary schools within the Whitley County Consolidated Schools district recently attended Pioneer Day at the Whitley County Ag Museum.Students visited 14 stations to learn about various aspects of pioneer life.Thanks to volunteers, students visited a one-room schoolhouse, pioneer kitchen, maple syrup operation and milking parlor. They also heard presentations on muzzle loaders, long hunters, pioneer music, candle making, wheat weaving, corn husk dolls, pioneer laundry, sewing, pioneer toys and games, soap making and arrowheads.The day was organized by Ron Myer, Barb Overdeer and fourth grade teachers from Coesse Elementary School. Many retired teachers and Ag Museum volunteers taught the students about pioneer life to complement their Indiana history curriculum.
