OUTAGES: Lapses in energy leaves residents powerless

SOUTH WHITLEY — Power outages have peppered the town of South Whitley in recent weeks. Two outages back-to-back Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 left many residents without electricity for hours. At a recent town council meeting, town leaders heard from Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) representatives as to the issues with the town’s power.“These outages were not IMPA’s issue, but Duke Energy’s outage,” said Eric Burch, manager of member services for IMPA. Although the town’s power contract is with IMPA, lines and service poles are shared with other power companies such as Duke Energy.“We all operate on a joint transmission system,” said IMPA’s Assistant Vice President Joel Roper. “We have a good working relationship with Duke and we want to keep it that way.”Power was out a total of six hours by Roper’s estimation.
