Richard Kiester, 91

Richard D. “Rick” Kiester, 91, a resident of Columbia City, died at 9:17 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, at Parkview Oaks where he had been a resident since April 2013.He was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Noble County, a son of the late Merle and Leah (Reed) Kiester. His formative years were spent in the Wolf Lake area where he graduated from high school in 1941.An accomplished basketball player, he was a member of the Wolf Lake basketball team that made it to the semi-state finals in 1941.Following his graduation, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1948, he went to Purdue University on the G.I. Bill and earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1952.Following his graduation, he took a job with the Farm Bureau and Federal Land Bank in Albion. Later he was transferred to Columbia City. In 1960, he started his own insurance and real estate agency in Columbia City. He sold the agency in 1989.He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1417, Columbia City, and American Legion Post 98. He loved to golf and fish in his spare time.Surviving relatives include a son, Gregg Kiester of Fort Wayne; two daughters, Brenda S. (Robert) Sweazey of Fort Wayne and Barbara Siebert of Columbia City; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jane Ott.There will be a private family funeral service followed by burial in the Stringtown Cemetery.
