Rosalie Armstrong, 74

Rosalie H. Armstrong, 74, a resident of Columbia City, died Sunday evening, March 20, 2011 in the Lutheran Hospital where she had been a patient since Friday.She was born Oct. 8, 1936 in Miami County, Ohio, near Troy, a daughter of Paul and Mildred Brown Williams. Her formative years were spent on the family dairy farm and she graduated from the Miami Central High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Indiana Central College and her masters degree in business from Ball State University.On June 9, 1956, she was united in marriage to Donald L. Armstrong and they made their home in Bremen where he taught and coached football. She taught high school for one year and grade school for a year while in Bremen. Then they moved to Boyleston, where Mr. Armstrong taught and coached football. In 1965, they moved to Columbia City and in 1967, she started teaching in the business department at the Columbia City High School retiring in 1993. Later she worked in the office at Smith and Sons Funeral Home for 14 years.A member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Rosalie was very involved in her church and community, the result of her being named Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year for United Way of Whitley County. Her greatest enjoyments were her family, her students and volunteering to help others. An only child, she is survived by her husband, Don; a son, Scott (Karen) Armstrong of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Theresa Curry of Columbia City; and two grandsons, Matthew and Joshua Curry.A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Columbia City High School auditorium, followed by a Celebration of Life reception until 5 p.m. at the school.
