SCHOOL SECURITY: Safety bill could have local impact

INDIANAPOLIS — Surrounded by members of his school safety working group, Governor Mike Pence Wednesday signed Senate Enrolled Act 1, which defines training requirements for school resource officers (SRO) and establishes a grant program to assist schools in enhancing their security.“We have no higher priority than ensuring the safety of our children,” said Pence. “In combination with our administration’s school safety working group, the legislation I sign today will provide new resources to make our schools safer so our teachers can focus on education and our kids can simply be kids.”Locally, Whitley County Consolidated Schools (WCCS) has already begun a close working relationship with local law enforcement and has discussed the possibilities of having a SRO in the district.“That would be something we would be very pleased about and something our district would want to look into,” said WCCS Superintendent Dr. Pat O’Connor, referring to the legislation.To read the rest of this story, see the May 9 issue of The Post and Mail.
