WHS hosts leadership group focusing on teamwork

SOUTH WHITLEY — December’s session of Leadership Whitley County, a group comprised of community members working on leadership, communication and servant skills, convened at the media center of Whitko High School in South Whitley.The workshop was hosted by LWC Alum Patty Weybright, and began with an awareness session featuring a panel of local non-profit organizations. Panel members including Sonya Emerick with CASA, Erica Miller from the Whitley County Family YMCA, Dani Tippmann and Aaron Mathieu with the Whitley County Historical Museum, Shawn Ellis from BABE of Whitley County, and Nikki Trier of The Troy Youth Center. Each panel member had the opportunity to provide an overview of their organization, detail its benefits to the community, connect with class members, and highlight areas for possible volunteer involvement. LWC Class 13 participants had a variety of questions for the panel members.The main topic for the day focused on how teamwork, positive social deviance and servant leadership leads to lasting change. Facilitators for the day were Ritch Hochstetler and Betsy Bontrager of uLEAD, based in Milford. The session including a variety of activities followed by discussion on the application to servant leadership and how these might apply in community leadership situations. Initiatives involved character and authenticity, putting people first, communication and collaboration.As the LWC program moves into 2014, class members will experience programs focusing on public speaking, conflict management and personal mission. A celebration graduation will be held, recognizing all class members Thursday, April 24, 2014.
