William Bumgardner, 86

SOUTH WHITLEY — William A. Bumgardner, 86, of South Whitley, died at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 at Parkview Main, Fort Wayne from injuries sustained in an auto accident Tuesday at the Walgreens parking lot in Huntington.He was born May 30, 1925 in Fort Wayne, a son of Charles A. “Pat” and Mable (Allen) BumgardnerHis formative years where spent on a farm near Monroeville. He graduated from Decatur High School.During World War II, he served with the Merchant Marines. On July 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Borcherding. They made their home on a farm in Allen County. The majority of his work career was as an auto mechanic beginning with the Pontiac dealer in Decatur, then Buick and Chevrolet.He later moved to DeSoto – Plymouth in Fort Wayne which became Chrysler – Plymouth. He started Bumgardner Service in Hoagland, doing auto repairs for seven years.He returned to Poinsette Chrysler-Plymouth in Fort Wayne for 10 years. He started a tractor repair shop that he ran until 1973 when they moved to Deltona, Fla.He worked for Scotty’s Home Building Supply in Florida for 16 years, designing kitchens until his retirement in 1987.They returned to Indiana, purchasing a farm in Washington Township, Whitley County. In 2001, they moved to South Whitley.Surviving relatives include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; a son, Charles Bumgardner, New York; daughter, Rev. Pat (Mary Jane Gibney) Bumgardner, New York, and a sister, Betty Marquardt of Monroeville.The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Rev James Clifford officiating.The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.
